Back to wildlife

The Red-eared Slider from eastern USA and Mexico is becomming
more and more common in the smaller lakes of Denmark,
-especially in the cities.

Most of the lakes and ponds in Copenhagen have a population of this turtle
due to illegal releases from people who bought the turtles as small green cute ones.

Then the turtles  grew up and became too big and  too difficult and the easiest way
to get rid of them was simply to dump them in the nearest waterhole!

An exotic but damaging introduction to the danish wildlife. The turtles live from
plants and the endangered frogs and frogeggs in the lakes.
But their numbers are still increasing maybe due to the cheap prices of the small turtles!

Fortunately the danish climate is ( was )  too cold for the turtle eggs to
develope and crack.

BUT ! Now there are news about that:
Due to the ( Non existing according to the usa, china ) climate change ,
they have started breeding in Denmark !
